Braided Infinity Scarf from Elegantees | retail: $24
Elegantees is one of those brands really committed to great work at a great price for everyday people (yeah, that's us). The piece you're holding in your hand was made by a trafficking survivor. It still blows us away how amazing it is to feel positively connected to someone's story by the very things we wear. The brand has a whole lineup of tops, dresses, and skirts on their website, and each one has a pricetag that gives us no excuse to shop anywhere else (nothing's over $50).
STYLIST TIP: These bright colors work surprisingly well with the subdued tones of fall, spicing up greys and burnt yellows. Just loop over your head, fluff to highlight the unique braiding, and add a shrug or denim jacket to finish off the look! For an added element of sparkle, a long pendant necklace layered underneath is a trick you'll want to try.
THE GOOD FACTOR: Each product from Elegantees is made by trafficking survivors in Nepal, providing a positive source of income, fostering independence, and boosting self-confidence.
Can you say, "MMMM..."? Chai spice somehow gets overshadowed by pumpkin in this season, but seriously, soak in this one a while and you'll be a convert to its warm, spice-laden embrace. Instant relaxation. We love bar soap because of the great shortlist of ingredients that stays pure, and with no animal testing and the creation of fair trade, economic opportunity for women, we'll be throwing in our re-order as soon as we're down to a sliver.
TUBTIME TIP: Get the temp just right and give yourself permission to close your eyes and just BE for a steam-filled moment. Take a deep inhale of the invigorating, sweet-and-savory scent and make sure relaxation warms you through and through before you towel off.
THE GOOD FACTOR: This product is part of Raven + Lily's "Empowering Women in India" collection. The hand-milled soap is made by marginalized and formerly trafficked women in Northern India. More here.
This piece fits in so well with our mission. Purpose Jewelry tells a story of hope, strength, and perseverance, and directly impacts survivors of modern-day slavery. Each piece is so beautiful and feels like a real treat. The name of the necklace, Kana, is short for Muskāna, which is Hindi for smile. The delicate tube gently curves upward to represent the newfound joy of survivors and the transformation that occurs as they heal and look towards the future. Beautiful in so many ways.
STYLIST TIP: A flash of golden glow at the neck is suited for the everyday just as much as for special occasions. We love the simplicity of a delicate piece like this one, which layers gorgeously with longer pieces from other collections (look to UNCVRD and FashionABLE to build your repertoire). One word of warning: make sure the quality is consistent. Costume jewelry next to a handcrafted piece like this might bring your look down. Invest in goodness!
THE GOOD FACTOR: Each product is handcrafted by a survivor of trafficking. 100% of the proceeds go to the work of International Sanctuary, a nonprofit that provides holistic care for young women who have escaped or survived being trafficked. Their goal: to create a safe and loving environment where these girls are free to laugh, smile, and be themselves.
Candles are an essential for cooling-down weather. In fact, it's the first thing we break out when the mercury goes south. We've been reading about the downfalls of burning paraffin (a petroleum-based product) in our homes, so we've been on the hunt for something better. Bright Endeavors fits the bill, not only with a healthy product, but with the goodness they're doing in the world. They're made with premium soy wax, phthalate-free scents, and lead-free wicks for a non-toxic, clean burn.
TRAVEL TIP: Bet you haven't packed a candle along for your travels before. Here's your challenge to give it a try. By getting out of your daily environment, it's the perfect opportunity for creating a space of escape. Inhaling a spirit-lifting scent is sure to get you in the mood for calming down.
THE GOOD FACTOR: Bright Endeavors is a non-profit social enterprise of New Moms Inc. that works with over 280 adolescent mothers and 300 children each year. They provide intensive training, offering a pathway out of poverty for young mothers in Chicago as they transition into quality, permanent employment.
