Meet & Greet: Kristy of Apple Rose Beauty

an introduction from Kristy Alexander, founder of Apple Rose Beauty

The bar was dim, as is the usual characteristic of the bars that specialize in the selling of vulnerable women. Girls paraded around in clothing that barely concealed their bodies, in much the same way their glossy smiles barely concealed the desperation in their eyes. They laughed convincingly while men grabbed at them, but Kristy Alexander was not fooled by the low lighting or the smoke screens their laughter put up. The desperation was too palpable to ignore.
“What’s your name?” Kristy asked her.

“Apple,” she said.

They smiled at each other. A friendship had just been struck.

This chance encounter with a trafficked victim in a bar in Thailand spurred the creation of a unique company that would impact the lives of many more women like Apple.

I'm Kristy Alexander, founder and Chief Big Heart at Apple Rose Beauty. Apple Rose Beauty is an organic skincare and beauty company that employs survivors of human trafficking and donates to organizations that rescue and rehabilitate them. The company is named after two human trafficking victims I met in Thailand while I was on The World Race – an 11-month mission trip to 11 countries!

At the peak of my successful, decade-long career in engineering, business, and management, I felt like something was missing. I was living the American dream but couldn't shake the feeling that there was something else I was supposed to be doing. Through a variety of circumstances, I heard about The World Race and felt so drawn to the opportunity that I left my job and sold my home to embark on a mission of working with some of the most marginalized communities in Central America, Asia, and Africa.

After coming face to face with the atrocity of human trafficking while I lived with survivors and frequented the bars in Southeast Asia to befriend victims, I knew I had to do something.

Upon my return to the U.S., I combined my love for and knowledge of natural remedies for healthy skin with a vision to provide freedom for those exploited through trafficking. I am as passionate about providing my customers with the best non-toxic skincare for beautiful glowing skin as I am about ending human trafficking.

Here are two quick tips to consider when making the shift to healthier skincare:

1. Look at what level of exposure we have to the personal care products we use. (Exposure considers the products we use most often and which ones cover the largest surface area of the skin for the longest period). For example, a hand wash that you use to clean only your hands and then wash off quickly constitutes less exposure than a body lotion that you baste all over your body and leave on for the entire day.

2. Watch out for the chemicals that have the potential to harm us most. Parabens, phthalates and sodium laurel sulfate top the list of culprits that expose us to risks like hormone disruption, cancer, and severe allergic reactions.

I like to suggest phasing out personal care products we have the most exposure to and that contain the most harmful ingredients and start replacing them with healthier, more natural alternatives.

Guess what! bonJOY's July box contains goodies from Apple Rose Beauty, like our clove-infused facial cleanser, a luxurious moisturizing treatment, and the top-notch vitamin C serum! And that's not all: we've also included a generous $10 off coupon that you can use to restock your new skincare favorites on our website!

Love your skin, enjoy these amazing products, support a wonderful cause, and let me know what you think. :-)
